One of the side effects of removing gluten from your diet can be sudden, uncontrollable itching. The headaches have been manageable, the mood swings and cravings very minimal. But the itching… maniacal.
I’ve clawed unsightly bruises into the irritated skin on my stomach, back and sides from scratching incessantly. I’ve been attempting to remedy the situation using my old standard Aveeno soaps and lotions with oatmeal as a soothing emollient. Guess what else they have in them? Gluten!
Leveraging my Friends Essential in a time of crisis, I asked Mollie if she had experienced anything similar — she hadn’t. Withdrawal symptoms are different for everyone. But what Mollie did was open my mind to a completely new kind of natural.
Mollie is what you would call a “homesteader” — the girl makes her own deodorant, laundry detergent… she texted me the other day about making her own almond milk! (And all this time, I’ve been settling for store-bought almond milk like a loser! Can you imagine?!)
She gave me precious hand-made gifts of lavender shea butter body cream, citrus beeswax lotion, and shea butter lemon lip balms (one for me, one for Bella).
I’ve tried Aveeno. I’ve tried Curel. I’ve tried Eucerin. I’ve tried straight up Benadryl anti-itch cream. NOTHING soothes the itch of my gluten withdrawal like these 100% natural, essential-oil infused, homemade cosmetics. They feel and smell amazing, and my skin is soft, smooth, and itch -free. I’m seriously blown away.
This natural cosmetics discovery is opening my mind to other opportunities chemicals, additives, and other icky ingredients have to enter my body in ways that aren’t food. Lotions and soaps, detergents and even household cleaning products… the impact is a little overwhelming.
Perhaps I should care as much about what I put ON my body as what I put IN it.
This Daniel Plan journey isn’t about being perfect — it’s about making small, lasting changes for a big impact on mind, body and spirit. I may never go full-on homesteader like Mollie, but I tell you this – I know where I’m getting my lotions from now on!
